Why are forum questions locked?

I don't remember seeing this in the past.  It is not helpful to lock posts.  I saw a post that was only 4 months old where I wanted to say that I had the same question.  I wanted to ask if anyone in the conversation had come up a workaround, but it is locked.

This is just a bad idea.  If forum members want to learn from each other, it does not help to lock them out.  I can certainly ask the same question again, but is that desirable?  And what if the original poster of the locked post did come up with a workaround?  My chances of them responding to a new post on the same topic is very unlikely!

While the forum software certainly leaves a lot to be desired, you may be able to access a locked question and change its status to 'Open' (look for dropdown next to "This question is"), allowing you to add content to it. I know I can, though I might have more privileges than your average bear.

Forum messages are locked to cut down on spam. Unfortunately, there is a lot of spam that targets forums and monitoring comments on old posts i difficult and time consuming.

Additionally, the active members in this forum aren’t always notified of new comments so they are more likely to be ignored.

We prefer to have users start new topics and link to old, relevant conversations and tag any users who may be able to help.
