auto_id - Only Increment for New Entries

I'm using auto_id and it increments the entry each time I update it.  How can I make it so it only increments for new entries?

I found that if auto_id is in the default field as text, it is only affected by form submissions. If it's added to default as a math calc, then it changes each time you update the entry.
