When I use the shortcode in my view: [573 show="avatar" size=50] no matter where I place it, the avatar only shows up on the left side of the page. I'm just trying to simply place it next to the username. does this have to be done w/ css? I

Most likely yes. You're going to have to wrap it in a div or something and then tweak with CSS.
