Can I display a count of the number of uploaded files

I have a file upload field which allows multiple uploads. In a view, I want to display the number of uploaded files for a particular entry, but not the actual files themselves. Is this possible and if so how would I go about it? Many Thanks, James.

One way I can think of is to create a custom shortcode, pass it the entry id and have the shortcode return the number by looking at the entry's data.
