I nearly went cuckoo trying to figure out how to do it using formidable truncate or a shortcode that did the truncation to create the default value of another field and finally gave up and just made some simple jQuery. Substitute the field keys in your form for the ones in the code.

I went through all those things as well, but just thought I wasn't doing something right...:)
Unfortunately it brings ove rthe whole name, not just the one letter:(

I'll bet I know what the issue is. The code I gave you acts on the change event. If you want it to do its thing when the form is loaded that requires an adjustment to the code.
